Our Commitment to Sustainability

Engage Marine is committed to reducing emissions and operating more sustainably across our fleet and operations. Our decarbonisation strategy focuses on immediate, measurable actions while preparing for the transition to low-emission fuels and future-ready vessels.

Our approach includes:

Optimising operations to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Investing in carbon offsetting through verified environmental projects.
Exploring biofuels as an alternative to conventional marine diesel.
Developing future-ready tug designs to enable long-term sustainability.

Operational Optimisation

We are implementing operational improvements to reduce emissions and fuel use across our fleet. By using real-time AIS data and reviewing operational efficiencies, we can identify areas where changes in planning, scheduling, and speed management can lower fuel consumption.

We have two projects registered with the Clean Energy Regulator to monitor a reduction in fuel consumption achieved through operational improvements. These are accredited to deliver up to 44,000 tonnes of CO2 abatement over the term of the crediting period and we are looking at additional opportunities to add to this abatement potential across both existing and new operations.

Carbon Offsetting: Tooligie Environmental Planting Project

To complement our operational efforts, Engage Marine has invested in large-scale carbon offsetting. The intention of our offsetting project is to compensate for emissions that are still present after we have taken all potential operational steps to reduce our footprint.

The Tooligie Project in South Australia is a 600-hectare reforestation initiative designed to absorb carbon emissions while restoring native ecosystems.

Project highlights:

550,000 trees planted over three years
55,000 trees already planted in phase one
Expands an existing nature reserve to enhance biodiversity
Certified to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) with an accredited 90,000 tonnes CO2 abatement expected over the crediting period.

This initiative ensures tangible, measurable carbon reductions while preserving natural environments.

Biofuel Research and Alternative Fuels

Engage Marine is actively assessing biofuels as a potential transition fuel to lower emissions from existing operations. Trials are underway in Pilbara, testing fuel additives that may improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

Challenges such as feed stock availability, cost, and certification remain, but we continue to explore the feasibility of biofuels as a viable alternative.

Future-Ready Tug Design

Long-term emissions reduction will require the adoption of low-emission vessels. Engage Marine is working with shipbuilders to develop future-ready designs that can transition to alternative fuel sources, such as battery-electric and hybrid propulsion.

Key considerations:

Battery-electric tugs are being evaluated for ports with short transits and predictable downtime.
Hybrid or alternative-fuel-ready vessels are being considered for ports where electrification is not yet viable.
New designs will ensure adaptability to future emissions regulations.
