The Karratha Leisureplex came alive on Wednesday 13 May as the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosted the 2026 KDCCI Careers Expo, and Westug was proud to be part of it.
With over 50 stalls representing some of Australia’s leading industries, including Rio Tinto, Woodside and Yara, the event gave students from across the Pilbara a firsthand look at the career opportunities available right in their own backyard. The energy on the floor was electric, with hundreds of students moving between stalls, asking questions and discovering pathways they may never have considered before.
A Busy Stall and Bright Futures
The Westug stall was one of the most engaged on the day. Students were curious, enthusiastic and full of questions about what a career in the maritime industry actually looks like day to day. From life on the water to the technical trades that keep our fleet running, there was no shortage of interest in what Westug has to offer.
With one school-based trainee position and two work experience placements available in 2027, the timing of the expo could not have been better. Connecting directly with local students in this environment is exactly the kind of conversation that can change the direction of a young person’s career.

The maritime industry is one that many young people simply do not consider when thinking about their future.
