When Aidan first joined Engage Marine on school work experience, it quickly became clear that he wasn’t just passing time, he was paving the way for a future career.
His strong work ethic stood out immediately. He showed up outside of scheduled hours, took initiative without being asked, and was always eager to contribute. Whether it was cleaning up the workshop or helping with hands-on tasks, Aidan’s attitude, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn made a lasting impression.
That commitment didn’t go unnoticed. Aidan is now Engage Marine’s first apprentice on a pathway to become a Class 3 Engineer, a unique opportunity that reflects our commitment to growing local talent and offering long-term maritime careers.
A Different Kind of Pathway
Unlike traditional apprenticeships, Engage’s pathway gives apprentices early exposure to vessel operations. Aidan is beginning his career as a Fitter apprentice and is gaining real experience from day one. Once his trade apprenticeship is complete, he’ll transition into completing his required sea time and formal training to qualify as a Class 3 Engineer.
It’s a hands-on journey that combines technical skills, operational knowledge, and time at sea, built on feedback from our crew and designed to suit real-world maritime needs.
A Strong Start
Now a few months into the program, Aidan is thriving. He’s become a valued part of the team in the Pilbara, regularly contributing to start-of-shift discussions, taking ownership of tasks, and impressing both clients and supervisors.
Even Aidan’s family has shared how proud they are of his progress and how much he’s enjoying the role.
Looking Ahead
Aidan may be the first to walk this pathway, but he won’t be the last. Engage Marine plans to expand this opportunity across other suitable ports as part of a long-term investment in local skills and workforce development.
When asked what advice he’d give to other school leavers, Aidan kept it simple:
“Don’t be scared to ask questions and get involved in as much as you can.”
